Some songs seem to hold an entire lifetime within them. They remind us of a person we once loved, a place we once called home, or a moment when we knew that something beautiful was coming to an end. Leonard Cohen’s So Long, Marianne is one of those songs. Beneath its warm melody and affectionate farewell lies a deeply human story about love, freedom, longing, and the difficulty of letting go.
My painting inspired by this song explores one particular moment in that story: Leonard Cohen leaving Marianne Ihlen on the Greek island of Hydra. I imagined the scene as a meeting of two worlds—the intimate world of a relationship nearing its end and the timeless beauty of an island that had witnessed their life together.
Through fractured faces, bold geometric shapes, and the sun-drenched colors of Greece, I wanted to capture not simply two people, but the complicated emotions that remain when love changes direction.
Cohen and Ihlen's connection continued beyond their romantic years. Their story also reached a poignant conclusion in 2016, when they died within a few months of one another. The affection and gratitude expressed in Cohen's final message to Marianne gave their history another layer of meaning, although their lives were much larger and more complicated than any single song could convey.
Ultimately, So Long, Marianne is my attempt to hold onto that complicated space between love and loss.
