“On a dark desert highway” -The Eagles
Hotel California is a painting inspired by the haunting atmosphere and enigmatic imagery of the Eagles’ iconic song of the same name. Rather than attempting to illustrate the lyrics literally, I wanted to capture the feeling of entering a place that is seductive, mysterious, and ultimately impossible to escape.
The painting presents a surreal hotel scene populated by fragmented architectural forms, a sharply dressed attendant, and two almost mannequin-like figures beside a pool. The exaggerated geometry, bold planes of color, and distorted perspectives create a world that feels simultaneously glamorous and unsettling. The hotel appears inviting, but something about it suggests that beneath the surface lies a darker story.
The song’s famous imagery—arrival at an alluring hotel, beautiful surroundings, temptation, and the realization that escape may not be possible—provided the emotional framework for the painting. I was particularly drawn to the tension between luxury and confinement, beauty and unease, reality and illusion.
As a former architect, I naturally approach the built environment through structure, geometry, and composition. Architecture has always been an important part of how I see the world, and in this painting I use the hotel almost as a character itself: imposing, theatrical, and full of secrets.
My Cubist-inspired approach breaks the architecture and figures into overlapping planes, allowing the scene to exist somewhere between a remembered place and an imagined one. This reflects my broader approach to painting—creating images that are less about reproducing reality and more about capturing the emotional memory of a place or experience.
Hotel California is ultimately a painting about the seductive nature of illusion. It asks the viewer to step inside, look around, and wonder: Is this paradise, or a beautiful trap?
This piece is part of my ongoing exploration of “Songs Made Visible”, a series of mixed media paintings inspired by music with architecture serving as a vessel for unseen narratives. Each work aims to evoke the stories and emotions hidden beneath the surface, inviting viewers to look beyond the obvious and discover the deeper layers within.
